How to join or start a Jitsi meeting

Updated By the Jitsi Help engineering team

Short answer

To join a Jitsi meeting, open the full invitation link, check your camera and microphone, enter your display name and choose Join meeting. On meet.jit.si, the person starting the room must sign in; participants joining afterward do not need an account. Your organization's own server may use different access rules.

You do not need to install a Jitsi server to attend a meeting. You need the correct invitation link and a device that can use the meeting’s audio and video.

This guide follows the official Jitsi user documentation. Button names and access rules can differ between meet.jit.si and a private server.

Join a meeting on a laptop or desktop

  1. Open the full invitation link. Use the link from the organizer, including its website address. A room on meet.example.com is different from a room with the same name on meet.jit.si.
  2. Check your devices on the preview screen. If you want to speak or use video, allow the trusted meeting site to use your microphone and camera when your browser asks. Check your physical mute switch or camera cover too.
  3. Enter your display name if prompted. Choose a name the other participants will recognize.
  4. Select Join meeting. If an access prompt appears, follow the organizer’s instructions. A login, room password and waiting lobby have different purposes.
  5. Confirm that you are in the intended meeting. Check the room and participants before sharing your screen or discussing private information.

Join on an Android phone or iPhone

Open the same full invitation link on your phone. Depending on the site, you may be offered the Jitsi Meet app or an option to continue in the browser. Follow your organizer’s instructions if they use a branded app.

If you use the app, get it through the links in the official Jitsi mobile guide. Keep the correct server address when opening a private meeting; entering only a room name on another server will not take you to the same call.

Allow microphone or camera access if you want to use them, and check that your headphones are connected to the phone. A laptop and phone in the same room can create feedback if both have their microphones and speakers active. Use one for audio or mute the extra device.

Start a new meeting on meet.jit.si

  1. Open meet.jit.si.
  2. Choose a distinctive room name, or use the site’s suggested name. Avoid a common name such as test that other people may also choose.
  3. Open the room, check the preview and join. As the person starting it, sign in using one of the providers offered by the site.
  4. Share the complete meeting link privately with your guests. If you set a room password, give invited participants that password too.

The official service requires sign-in to create a room. Later participants can join without an account. If you arrived through someone else’s invitation and see a moderator prompt, ask the organizer to start the room rather than assuming you must create a new account.

On an organization’s own Jitsi server, use that server’s website and host credentials or invitation flow. Its access rules are set by its operator.

Check the invitation when something looks wrong

What you see What to check first
Waiting for a moderator Ask the organizer whether they have started the room on the same server.
Room password prompt Ask the organizer for the current meeting password.
Wrong or empty meeting Compare the full domain and room name with the invitation, and check the scheduled time.
No camera or microphone Check device selection and site permissions, then use the linked device guide.

If a problem affects several guests, tell the organizer which devices and browsers are affected. They can involve the server administrator. See where to get Jitsi help for the appropriate support route.
