# How to use the Jitsi Meet app on Android and iPhone

> Install Jitsi Meet from Google Play, the App Store or F-Droid, then open the meeting link and choose the app, or type the room name on the app's home screen. To use your organization's own Jitsi server, set its address under Server URL in the app's settings. The app can share your screen with Start screen sharing, shows captions inside the chat screen, and keeps the call going in the background, which phone browsers do less well.

The Jitsi Meet app is the official mobile client for Jitsi meetings, made by the Jitsi team. It joins meetings on meet.jit.si and on any other Jitsi server.

## Get the app

Install Jitsi Meet from one of the stores the [Jitsi handbook](https://jitsi.github.io/handbook/docs/user-guide/user-guide-jitsi-meet-on-mobile/) links:

- [Google Play](https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.jitsi.meet) for Android
- [App Store](https://apps.apple.com/us/app/jitsi-meet/id1165103905) for iPhone and iPad
- [F-Droid](https://f-droid.org/en/packages/org.jitsi.meet/) for Android without Google services

Some organizations hand out their own branded app instead. If yours does, use that one.

## Join a meeting

**From a link:** open the meeting link on your phone. The page offers to join with the Jitsi Meet app or to continue in the browser. Choose the app.

**With a room name:** open the app, type the room name on the home screen and tap **Create / Join**. The room name is the last part of the meeting link: in `https://meet.jit.si/TeamStandup2026` it is `TeamStandup2026`. This joins the room on the server set in the app (meet.jit.si unless you changed it).

When the app asks for the camera and microphone, allow them if you want to be seen and heard. More on joining, sign-in and passwords is in [how to join or start a Jitsi meeting](/guides/join-or-start-jitsi-meeting/).

## Use your organization's own Jitsi server

If your company, school or provider runs its own Jitsi server, a room name alone takes you to a different meeting on meet.jit.si. Either open the full link they send you, or:

1. Open the app's **Settings**.
2. Enter the server's address, for example `https://meet.example.com`, under **Server URL**.
3. Go back and join with the room name.

If the app says "The entered server URL is invalid", check the address with your IT team. **Show advanced settings** also offers options such as **Disable Peer-To-Peer mode** and **Disable native call integration**; leave them alone unless support asks you to change them.

## Share your screen

In a meeting, tap **Start screen sharing** in the toolbar or its more options menu.

- **Android:** confirm Android's screen capture prompt to start sharing.
- **iPhone:** iOS shows its own screen broadcast prompt. Confirm it to start sharing.

Tap the same button again to stop.

Screen sharing turns off in audio-only mode. If the button is missing or greyed out, see [screen sharing not working](/troubleshooting/jitsi-screen-sharing-not-working/).

## Captions and translation

When the meeting's server has transcription turned on, the app shows captions inside the chat screen (added in app version 26.0.0, January 2026). Version 26.3.0 (September 28, 2026) added picking a translation language for subtitles and real-time audio translation. These need support on the server; see [caption languages and translation](/guides/jitsi-captions-languages-translation/) if you run one.

## Other things the app does

- **Picture-in-picture:** during a meeting the call can keep playing in a small window when you switch apps (on Android, version 8 and newer).
- **Car mode and low bandwidth mode:** a simplified screen for driving, and an option to save data on weak connections.
- **Calendar:** connect your calendar to see upcoming meetings on the home screen.

## App or phone browser?

Both work. The Jitsi handbook lists Chrome and Firefox on Android with the same support as on a computer, and every iPhone browser with Safari's support, since they all use Safari's engine (Safari 14.3 or newer). The handbook still recommends the app on phones for a better experience, for example keeping the call running in the background, Bluetooth support and, on iPhone, CallKit integration so the meeting behaves like a phone call.

## If something does not work

| Problem | Where to look |
|---|---|
| Others cannot see or hear you | Allow camera and microphone for Jitsi Meet in your phone's settings, then rejoin. See [camera or microphone not working](/troubleshooting/jitsi-camera-microphone-not-working/) |
| "Waiting for a moderator" or a password prompt | [Login, moderator and password prompts](/guides/jitsi-login-moderator-password/) |
| You land in an empty meeting | Check the server under Server URL, or open the organizer's full link instead of typing the room name |
| The meeting ends after 95 minutes on meet.jit.si | [The meet.jit.si 95-minute limit](/guides/meet-jit-si-95-minute-limit/) |

## What we have not confirmed yet

We wrote this from the Jitsi handbook, the app's release notes and its source code, and have not yet walked through every step on real Android and iPhone devices. In particular:

- Exact button positions, which change between app versions and phone sizes.
- The wording of the Android and iOS screen sharing prompts, which belong to the operating system.
- Whether every feature listed is turned on in branded apps that organizations build from the Jitsi SDK.

## Frequently asked questions

### Do I need the app to join a Jitsi meeting on my phone?

No. Jitsi supports Chrome and Firefox on Android and Safari-based browsers on iPhone. The Jitsi handbook recommends the app for a better experience, such as keeping the call running in the background and Bluetooth support.

### How do I join my company's Jitsi server from the app?

Open the full meeting link from your company, or set the company's server address under Server URL in the app settings and then enter the room name.

### Can I share my screen from the Jitsi Meet app?

Yes. Tap Start screen sharing in the meeting. On iPhone, iOS then shows its own screen broadcast prompt to confirm.

### Why do I not see captions in the app?

Since app version 26.0.0, captions appear inside the chat screen. The meeting's server also has to have transcription turned on, otherwise there are no captions to show.

### Where can I download the Jitsi Meet app?

From Google Play, the Apple App Store or F-Droid. The Jitsi handbook links all three.
